Streaming servers (and geekspeek)

I spent today setting up a video streaming server for the e-Performance conference.

The software I used was a combination of Quicktime Broadcaster and Darwin Streaming Server. Broadcaster makes the video stream while Dawin Streaming Server, well, Serves it.
I don't want to sound like an ad for Apple- but I'm particularily impressed with Darwin Streaming Server.
It's one of the golden things that have come out of Apple's Darwin project which is the open source underbelly of OSX. Its interesting to see that Apple turned around at the point when M$ was waging war against linux and the open source community, and decided to test the waters of open source.

I've noticed that Darwin Streaming Server has been compiled for Linux and Windows too. Which excites me because I'm going to setup a linux box here and keep some video on it to stream to the xbox cause I've filled up the 200 gigs with videos and games.

Unless there is a better streaming service that anybody knows about for Linux???

I particularily like Dawin Streaming Servers web interface- I really think that using browsers for maintenance is cool. But then again I've always liked CUPS and ofcourse I've always been a big fan of Webmin.

Incidentally I'm starting to use Quicksilver more and more since Tali hassled me to use it the other day. Its basically like spotlight just a million times better. In other words- if you are using OSX and aren't using Quicksilver: DOWNLOAD IT NOW.

Did you know that if you write a bunch of words in Firefox's url bar (i.e. don't type in a valid url) - it uses google's "I'm feeling lucky" function and takes you to what it thinks is the best match with those words??

CHEAPEST WAY THAT WORKS TO BIGGER YOUR D!CK he

Okay, Sometimes I find spam just plain confusing... Like this email I received this morning. It is complete garbage but not even trying to sell me anything- although the subject line would appear to be so (title of this post). Its almost a haiku:

tying immediate money carefully light, she you music make.
mischievous fly teach? here wife money news fascinate turning. fire sandwich off disappoint he sugar?
mischievous window find end am. or letters you again?
sugar turning nothing appearance did, nothing appearance you fire anything.
disappoint my make gym suddenly nothing? principle or fire again. respect drew not?

crashing computers

I'm not very good at making my computer crash but I did manage a beauty with a humble PDF.
I've perhaps crashed my iBook three times in three years of owning it.

I've turned off that stupid word validation system and replaced it with comment moderation:

Impermanence

Unlike Ivar I quite liked castings last night- also unlike Ivar, I quite disliked my set.
I kinda felt it (my set) was pretty weak- both in structure and material.
People seemed to give some fairly positive feedback, but I can never tell these days what is genuine and what is obligatory comment... no offence to anybody!

I think that castings always shows so much potential (although its rarely reached) producing absolutely beautiful sonic moments. Enjoyable.

Matt and Inge were fairly painful in most senses of the word. They take minimalism very seriously - which I can respect. Although I wonder sometimes wether they are trying to bore us to death with an unbelievably sparse and long set.

Just tellin' it like it is.

Kirsch

I've posted a copy of my track 'Kirsch' online for general download here.

It originally surfaced at the Pelt Gallery opening a couple of months ago. Now you can all take a copy home via the wonder of www! High art is reduced to music?

P.A were awesome

Image of P.A's projection taken on my phone camera

Went to Blacktown perfomance of AV Out with John Hunter, Emily Morandini and P.A. (phil and andrew) a couple of days ago.
Although John Hunter's set showed an amazing amount of potential... it seemed that technical glitches got the better of him in the end. Some beautiful sounds were happening though- I really like John's aesthetics.

Emily's set was disapointing... to be brutally honest.

P.A were amazing though... some great sounds and fantastic visual accompaniment. I took a happy snap of their projections. Not feeling too verbose about it today, just felt like dishing out the kudos. Nice one.

New (ware)House

Okay... been a while since I've put something up here I know.
But I was sure that you all would want to see the warehouse that Alison and I put down one month's rent on.
Due to get the place by the 14th which we will fix it up for a couple of days then move in.
This one is of the back of the space- toilet on the right, alison and real estate agent on the left.
Windows facing Kippax St.

And more windows facing Kippax st. Question is, where should we put the loft? (always wanted to sleep up high.

Which reminds me- 25th of November will be a party at 67a Abercrombie st to say sayonara to Jasper being there. I believe its called a house cooling party...
